What Ofsted said
From the inspection on 24 June 2025
Every day is used as an opportunity for pupils to 'Bring it', the trust's aspirational value, in lessons and in their interactions around the school. The curriculum is ambitious. Staff make lessons interesting, lively and meaningful. Pupils respond positively by trying their hardest, sharing their ideas and valuing the contributions of their peers. As a result, lessons at St Petroc's are purposeful, and pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), typically learn the curriculum well. Pupils of all abilities are valued at this family-oriented, inclusive school. Most rightly say that bullying is rare and that if it happens, it is sorted out quickly. They recognise that staff look after them and deal with issues well, if there are any. Pupils respond well to the high expectations set by staff. They show positive attitudes to their learning, and they behave well. The school has broadened its offer significantly and so there are more plentiful opportunities for pupils to follow and develop their talents and interests. For example, the school is increasingly implementing the trust's broad outdoor and adventurous activities programme. As a result, pupils are increasingly enjoying school, which is reflected in improved attendance for many.
What the school should improve
- The writing curriculum asks pupils to attempt to write too much too soon. This means some pupils do not secure the transcription skills to write fluently, particularly when asked to write for more complex tasks. The school should continue to develop the writing curriculum so that pupils learn to form letters, punctuate accurately and secure fluent handwriting before being asked to write more creatively across the curriculum.
- The school's processes for ensuring that it can identify pupils with SEND's needs early and meet them effectively are not as effective as they should be. This can mean that some pupils' needs go unidentified and so adaptions to help them learn the curriculum are not as effective as they could be. The school should strengthen how it identifies and meets the needs of pupils with SEND so that they learn the curriculum consistently well.
