What Ofsted said

From the inspection on 17 March 2026

Pupils thrive at this ambitious and inclusive school. They are proud to belong to a diverse community of dedicated staff and pupils who are kind to and respectful of one another. Pupils feel safe and say that bullying is not an issue in their school. They feel that staff listen to and understand them. For all pupils, but particularly for those who may have struggled with school in the past, the school provides a stable and happy place for them to 'be the best they can be'. Many pupils attend regularly but work is on going to ensure overall attendance improves. The school has high expectations of pupils' behaviour and academic success. The curriculum is adapted to challenge pupils and ensure that those who need additional support receive this. Pupils therefore enjoy their learning across a range of subjects and know that staff will support them, whatever their starting points. Many pupils make swift academic progress from their starting points. Pupils, including those who attend the specially resourced provision for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, are provided with a range of opportunities which enable them to fulfil their potential and prepare them well for life beyond school. Alongside academic qualifications, pupils take part in extra-curricular opportunities ranging from drama, music, debating, art and games, to competitive sports and the Duke of Edinburgh's award. Pupils participate keenly, including those who are disadvantaged. The school's values of ambition, resilience and community unite everyone. St Mark's is a special place where difference is celebrated and pupils are able to succeed and be themselves.

What the school should improve

  • Leaders should maintain a sharp focus on improving attendance, particularly the attendance of some pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, so that recent improvements in pupils' attendance are sustained over time.
  • Leaders should continue to strengthen the careers programme so that younger pupils have even more opportunities to learn about the world of work.
