Pupils are safe, happy and valued at Somerlea Park Juniors. They benefit from a warm, inclusive culture and positive, caring relationships with staff. The school prioritises pupils’ wellbeing. Pupils learn to understand their emotions and build resilience. The school’s rules of ‘be kind, be ready and work hard’ are embedded throughout all aspects of school life. Most pupils strive to meet leaders' high expectations of them. Staff skilfully support pupils who need additional help to follow these rules. As a result, pupils typically benefit from a calm and purposeful learning environment. Pupils are polite and respectful. They are keen to discuss their learning and experiences. Pupils say that behaviour is good, and bullying is rare. If bullying does happen, it is addressed straight away. Pupils enjoy making friends. They cooperate well with others. Pupils told inspectors that other pupils are ‘super kind’. Pupils have a secure knowledge and understanding of key values that underpin life in modern Britain. For example, they understand that discrimination is wrong. Pupils value the enrichment activities the school provides, for example, visits from a West End theatre group, mini golf and gardening clubs. These opportunities help pupils to develop new talents and interests. Pupils demonstrate positive attitudes towards their learning. They typically benefit from effective teaching and generally achieve well from their starting points. Pupils told inspectors that they learn a lot and feel well prepared for secondary school. However, some pupils do not attend school as regularly as they should and therefore do not access the full range of learning and opportunities that are available. Pupils are at the heart of leaders' decisions. Any barriers to pupils' learning are identified and support is quickly put in place when it is needed. Consequently, most pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, or who face other barriers to learning, benefit from the education and wider opportunities the school provides.

What the school should improve

• Leaders should ensure that all pupils attend school regularly, so that they benefit from all that the school has to offer.
• Leaders should continue their work to secure consistently effective teaching of writing, so that pupils secure key foundational knowledge and the quality of their writing further improves across the curriculum.
• Leaders should continue their work to ensure that highly effective teaching is embedded, so that pupils develop knowledge securely across the curriculum.
