Pupils enjoy attending this small school with a big heart. Staff and Teddy, the therapy dog, greet pupils warmly each morning. Staff know pupils well. This helps pupils to feel safe and valued. The school’s ethos is evident in everyday life and shapes the caring community experienced by pupils, families and staff.  Pupils attend regularly and value being part of the school community. Pupils behave well. They treat one another with respect and contribute positively to the calm atmosphere in school. Staff provide appropriate support for those who sometimes find it difficult to manage their emotions. When incidents of bullying occur, staff deal with them swiftly and effectively. Pupils enjoy learning and readily ask for help when needed. They engage well in lessons and take pride in their work.  Pupils benefit from a range of enrichment opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom. For example, all pupils learn to swim in the on-site pool, and older pupils attend a residential.  Pupils listen carefully to the views of others and show respect. Most pupils, including those with additional needs, make positive progress from their starting points because barriers to learning are identified and addressed effectively. However, owing to some weaknesses in the delivery of the curriculum, overall, pupils do not achieve as well as they should in basic writing skills, and their knowledge across some wider curriculum subjects is not as secure as it should be by the end of Year 6. Pupils value the opportunities they have to take on leadership roles. For example, they serve as dining hall helpers and wellbeing ambassadors. These roles help pupils to develop confidence and a sense of responsibility. Most pupils, including those with additional needs, access the full curriculum. Staff support pupils who face barriers to learning so that they can take part fully in school life.

What the school should improve

• Leaders should strengthen the teaching of writing so that pupils secure fluent handwriting and sentence composition, leading to improved published outcomes.
• Leaders should ensure that teachers consistently identify and address any gaps in pupils' knowledge across the curriculum, so that pupils retain key knowledge and are well prepared for the next steps of learning.
• Leaders, including governors, should ensure that they have a thorough oversight of all aspects of the school's work and routinely evaluate the impact of the school's improvement strategies to ensure that pupils achieve as well as they should.
