Mendell Primary School sits at the heart of its community. Pupils are at the centre of all that staff do. The school's vision of 'Dream big, work hard, belong' encourages pupils to aim high and take pride in their work. In the early years, children make a positive start. Caring staff support their learning and development so that they are well prepared for Year 1. Pupils approach lessons with enthusiasm and curiosity. They build the knowledge and skills that they need for the future and achieve well. Any barriers to learning or wellbeing are identified early. Staff provide support that helps pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, to make progress from their starting points. By the end of Year 6, pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education. Pupils feel that they belong. They are encouraged to take part in all that the school offers. Pupils build positive relationships with staff and each other. They describe the school as a happy, friendly place. Pupils are proud of their school and enjoy sharing their work. They benefit from the extensive grounds, including a large field and bushcraft area, which enrich their experiences of school. The personal development offer gives pupils access to opportunities that they might not otherwise have, including careers-related activities and experiences beyond the classroom that raise aspirations. Pupils thrive at this school. They feel safe, happy and well cared for. Pupils behave well in lessons and around the school. They show positive attitudes to learning and treat others with kindness and respect. Staff deal with any incidents of bullying quickly and effectively. Most pupils attend regularly. Overall attendance is close to national figures and continues to improve. As a result, pupils are well placed to benefit from all aspects of school life.

What the school should improve

  • Leaders should ensure that teachers use assessment information effectively to adapt learning for pupils who are not yet secure in early reading and writing, or have gaps in their knowledge, so that these pupils develop greater accuracy, fluency and confidence in phonics and writing.
  • Leaders should broaden the opportunities for pupils to participate in the arts, music and sport to enhance pupils' wider experiences, support their cultural development and help them to develop their talents and interests further.
  • Leaders should continue their work to improve pupils' attendance to ensure that pupils who do not attend as well as they should come to school more often.
