Every pupil who walks through the door of Joseph Leckie Academy is treated as an individual with potential. Pupils move through a school day shaped by calm routines and clear expectations. Pupils attend regularly. Each morning begins in a reassuring way, with staff visible and welcoming. This helps pupils feel settled, safe and ready to learn. Pupils learn a well-structured curriculum. Many benefit from teaching that breaks learning into manageable steps. Inclusion sits at the heart of daily practice. Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, those new to English and others who need additional help, are valued and celebrated as individuals. Leaders understand pupils' circumstances. They track their needs closely and ensure support is in place across subjects. Although the quality of teaching varies in some curriculum areas, pupils are taught by staff who want them to succeed and feel that they belong. Pupils enjoy their learning, make good progress from their starting points and achieve well. Relationships across the school are warm, respectful and steadying. There are high expectations that drive a very positive behaviour climate. Pupils speak openly with staff and trust that adults will listen and act if pupils have concerns. Bullying is dealt with effectively. There is a broad range of clubs and frequent opportunities for trips and visits that all pupils are supported to attend. Older pupils, including those in the sixth form, talk confidently about their learning and their next steps. This reflects the school's culture that supports ambition and readiness for the future. These experiences help pupils feel included, valued and able to play a full and confident part in school life.

What the school should improve

• Leaders should ensure that all staff apply agreed approaches to assessment consistently so that, in lessons, teachers check what pupils have understood and remembered and use this information to adapt teaching where needed.
• Leaders should continue to improve attendance for all pupils, including those who are disadvantaged, by ensuring that strategies to promote regular attendance are used consistently and have a sustained impact over time.
