What Ofsted said

From the inspection on 6 December 2022

Strong relationships between pupils and staff contribute to a positive and nurturing atmosphere in the school. Pupils talk about their feelings of safety and their trust of adults in the school. Pupils move around the school calmly and with maturity. They are engaged in their learning and begin their work quickly. Pupils develop positive attitudes towards learning through approaches such as the 'passport to learning'. Pupils understand the school's values and live these through their interactions with each other. They know what these values mean in practice. As one pupil said about the school value of ambition, 'It means being the best that you can be every day.' There is a clear and consistent understanding from pupils about what bullying is and what it is not. When bullying is reported, it is dealt with swiftly and effectively by leaders. Pupils enjoy a curriculum that is carefully thought through and ambitious. They have opportunities to enjoy trips, experiences and visitors that enrich their learning experiences in different subjects.

What the school should improve

  • Pupils in key stage 2 who are still at the earlier stages of reading are not supported well enough to catch up quickly. Assessment of the gaps in their phonic knowledge is not regular enough to identify precisely the sounds in which they are not secure. As a result, some pupils do not develop their speed and accuracy in reading quickly. Leaders should ensure that the assessment for pupils at the early stages of reading in key stage 2, including pupils with SEND, is a priority. They should ensure that the support these pupils receive is closely matched to their phonics needs.
