Pupils are happy and proud to be part of the caring community fostered at Goostrey Community Primary School. They are polite and make a positive contribution to life in the school and beyond. Pupils study a wide range of world faiths. They understand why everyone should be treated fairly. Pupils can explain their values with confidence and maturity. They are very well prepared for life in modern Britain. From the early years onwards, relationships between staff and pupils are warm and respectful. This is the case on both the infant and junior sites. Incidents of bullying or discrimination are uncommon. Pupils are confident that staff will help them to deal quickly with any concerns they may have. Pupils feel safe and well cared for. Most pupils enjoy school and attend regularly. Children in the early years make a secure and happy start to their education. Pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and those who are disadvantaged, work hard to meet expectations for their behaviour and achievement. Pupils behave well in lessons and around the school. Staff understand the barriers and challenges that some pupils face in their learning. They typically provide the support which pupils need to succeed. Pupils achieve well, particularly in phonics, reading and mathematics. Most pupils build their knowledge and skills effectively over time. They leave school well prepared for the next stage of their education. Pupils benefit from the long-standing partnership with a school in South Africa. This encourages positive relationships and an understanding of life beyond their small rural village. Pupils also develop their sense of responsibility through leadership roles. They take part in a wide range of clubs and residential trips that build their independence and confidence. Pupils, including those with SEND and those who are disadvantaged, consistently take part in these opportunities.

What the school should improve

• Leaders and those responsible for governance should take action to strengthen their oversight of key systems and records, and use information more systematically, so that decisions are clearly evidence-based and governors can hold leaders to account with confidence.
• Leaders should ensure that the continuous provision in the early years is planned with clear learning purposes, appropriate challenge and key vocabulary, so that children benefit from purposeful learning throughout the day.
