Ferring C of E Primary is a welcoming school, where pupils flourish. Pupils model the Ferring values through their actions and in their work. They benefit from the excellent relationships they have with staff. This helps them grow in confidence rapidly. Pupils are happy and safe in school. Pupils understand the school rules of 'Ready, Respectful, Safe'. This helps them know how they are expected to behave. Pupils have a strong sense of what is right and wrong. Children in Reception learn school routines quickly. They show high levels of interest and engagement in learning. This continues as pupils progress through the school, where they learn and achieve well. Pupils like the strong sense of community. They take an active role in the school and are keen to help each other. Pupils take great pride in carrying out a range of responsibilities, including school council and playground activity leaders. Incidents of unkindness are rare. If bullying happens, it is dealt with swiftly by adults. Pupils relish the wider opportunities available to them. They enjoy clubs such as football and origami. They also look forward to trips, including visits to the local beach and Arundel Castle, enjoying the different ways these help them learn.

What the school should improve

• In some subjects, teachers' knowledge about the curriculum is not fully developed. As a result, teachers are not able to identify and address gaps in pupils' understanding. Leaders should ensure that teachers have a consistent understanding of curriculum content and progression in all subjects.
• Some subject leaders are new to the role. As a result, they are not yet able to provide timely support to staff. This means that in those subjects, pupils do not learn as well as they should. Senior leaders should ensure that subject leaders are well trained and supported to carry out their roles effectively.
