There is a warm and friendly environment at Birdwell Primary School. The corridors are filled with inspiring artwork, high-quality and inviting books and displays that celebrate pupils’ achievements. All staff demonstrate high expectations of pupils in every aspect of school life. Pupils demonstrate exemplary behaviour. They welcome visitors warmly and use their manners in every interaction with adults and peers. Pupils feel safe and bullying is rare. The school is committed to ensuring that all pupils achieve well. Leaders’ relentless focus on removing barriers for all pupils has led to strong achievement over time. Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities make impressive progress from their starting points. In lessons, pupils demonstrate resilience in learning when approaching activities. They do not shy away from a challenge. Older pupils speak with confidence about what they have learned. They are well prepared for their next steps. Pupils attend regularly. They are punctual and move sensibly into their classrooms to begin learning. Opportunities for pupils to demonstrate their leadership skills are wide ranging. From the school’s ‘sustainability ambassadors’ to the ‘tuck shop monitors', all pupils are given the opportunity to learn important skills such as working with others and speaking clearly to an audience. Enrichment activities are tracked carefully by the school. Leaders ensure that all pupils have equal opportunities to take part in the array of extra-curricular activities. As a result of the school’s work, pupils are very well prepared for life in modern Britain.

What the school should improve

• Leaders should support all staff to implement the curriculum in the early years as intended to ensure that children have further opportunities to develop, practise and learn new knowledge across all aspects of the curriculum.
